First of all, beware any prctdous that are aggressively marketed with claims of dramatic fuel economy increases. Almost all of those claims are fraudulent. Turbonators are a good example of a product that will actually hurt your fuel economy and reduce horsepower if you install it.What WILL increase your fuel economy?Well first of all, get rid of all that junk in the trunk. Seriously. Most people are hauling around all manner of things in the trunks of their cars that don’t need to be there. Shed those pounds! What else?Let’s see:1) Change your rear end’s gear ratio. A taller gear ratio (numerically smaller) will give you slightly slower acceleration, but a higher top speed and, more importantly, it’ll have your engine doing less work, and burning less fuel, at freeway speeds.2) Install an aftermarket exhaust and replace your catalytic converter with a low-restriction model. Your cat’s probably gunked up inside from years of use, so any new cat will let the engine breathe better. A high performance one may give you even more of an improvement. A high performance exhaust and muffler, of course, will also permit better breathing, thus increasing fuel economy and horsepower. Just make sure the exhaust diameter isn’t too huge, or you’ll actually lose torque, due to the fact that your engine needs some back pressure to function properly.3) Get a tune up and change the oil regularly. Ditto for the air filter.4) Install a K N reusable air filter. As with the performance exhaust, this helps your engine breathe better, thus increasing power and fuel economy. It’s also possible to replace the air intake with a high performance model and get even more of an improvement.5) Install an ignition kit from MSD or Jacob Electronics. Either company will sell you a kit that includes a high energy coil, heavy duty spark plug wires, and a little box that lives under your hood and contains a computer which will constantly monitor and adjust your timing and spark for maximum power and fuel efficiency. This will also make your engine run a lot smoother than you ever expected it could.6) Keep your tires fully inflated. This helps fuel economy and emergency lane change handling. And it doesn’t cost anything.
